Physician scholarship dedicated to diversity and education
The Estil Strawn, Sr. Scholarship was established to honor the memory of Dr. Estil Strawn, Sr.
Dr. Strawn was a second generation African American physician, serving for many years as an obstetrician and gynecologist at St. Mary’s Hospital of Milwaukee. In tribute to his notable career as a physician and his commitment to diversity in health care, the scholarship assists minority status employees in their pursuit of higher education to further their careers at Columbia St. Mary’s. The scholarship is generously funded by Dr. Strawn’s family.
This year's $1,000 scholarship reciepients are Lisette Cerda and Denisse Guadalupe.
Proud scholarship recipient Lisette
Lisette Cerda is an Outpatient Procedure Registered Nurse at CSM’s Gateway Clinic, and has worked in a variety of roles at Columbia St. Mary’s for eleven years. She explains, “My ability to function well in a variety of different roles indicates my interest in learning new things and the willingness to take on additional responsibilities.”
Lisette exemplifies Dr. Strawn’s commitment to diversity and health care with her desire to integrate cultural knowledge with individual cultural differences and cultural diversity. She says, “Eliminating racial and ethnic disparities in health requires new knowledge about the causes of health disparities, enhanced efforts at preventing disease, and delivering culturally competent and linguistically specific preventative and clinical services.”
Lisette is currently attending a bachelors program at Cardinal Stritch University. Her goal is to continue for her Masters degree in the future.
Denisse Guadalupe is a Clinic Medical Assistant in the Pain Management Department at Columbia St. Mary’s Hospital Milwaukee. Denisse feels it is important to maintain a positive attitude and to make every patient feel they are special and important.
Denisse believes this scholarship will help her reach her goals. She explains, “Working for Columbia St. Mary's not only gives me an employment opportunity, but also helps me by giving me the means to expand my options and advance my career within Columbia St. Mary's. Going back to school can be expensive, that’s why this scholarship means a lot to me. There are not many companies that provide financial support for their employees; it’s another reason that makes Columbia St. Mary's a great organization to work for.”
Denisse Guadalupe believes this
Denisse is working towards her Associates Degree in Nursing at Milwaukee Area Technical College and looks forward to fulfilling her childhood dream of helping vulnerable populations through providing exceptional patient care.
Lisette and Denisse both are fluent in Spanish which helps CSM’s Spanish-speaking patients feel more comfortable and better informed. Their experiences, skills and values made them perfect candidates for the Dr. Estil Strawn, Sr. Scholarship.
Columbia St. Mary’s Foundation applauds the hard work and determination of these scholarship recipients. Dr. Strawn would have been proud to work with such accomplished employees who share his values of diversity and education.
Columbia St. Mary’s Foundation values education through scholarships and continuing education funds that allow physicians and employees to expand their skills and knowledge. The Dr. Estil Strawn, Sr. Scholarship is just one of the several scholarship opportunities available through Columbia St. Mary’s Foundation.
