Columbia St. Mary's and the Ozaukee community lost a true friend on September 27, 2010 - one who continually gave from his heart. Ralph Huiras had a profound impact on the lives and well-being of those who live in Ozaukee County. Columbia St. Mary's is proud to have counted him as a friend, a counselor and a benefactor who supported the hospital since the days of St. Alphonsus.

Fifteen years ago, Columbia St. Mary's Hospital Ozaukee started a free clinic that serves the underinsured and uninsured in Ozaukee County.

The Huiras Family Ozaukee Community Health Clinic is a volunteer-based clinic. Paid staff includes a registered nurse, nurse practitioner and a social worker. It also depends on approximately 40 volunteers including community physicians, additional nurses and social workers.

The clinic provides primary care services to those in need, including screening, treatment and specialty services. The Clinic also provides ongoing care to many patients with chronic and complex diseases.

Often, patients of the clinic have been heard saying, "I never dreamed I would be in this position," "I am thankful you are here for us," or "This is the only resource available to us in Ozaukee county."

The services provided by this clinic would not be possible without the philanthropic vision of Ralph Huiras, who was instrumental in endowing the program. "The generous donations given to us by Mr. Huiras have enabled us to provide care to individuals who otherwise would have no other resources," said Sharon Streff, Director of Testing and Treatment at Columbia St. Mary's Hospital Ozaukee.

In 2005, he brought his vision and compassion to more people in need when he gave a $1.2 million grant to open The Huiras Center at CSM Ozaukee, which serves teens and adults in need of substance abuse screening, assessment and treatment.

The generosity of Ralph Huiras has benefited countless individuals and groups throughout Ozaukee County. Ralph was a community leader, philanthropist and member of countless boards, associations and corporations. "He was a dear man - a gentleman and philanthropist," said Lisa Fromming, President of Columbia St. Mary's Foundation. "He will be sadly missed by all and always remembered for his kindness and compassion for others."

The Huiras name and spirit will live on in Ozaukee County for generations to come. Perhaps Ralph said it best, "If you take out of our community, you have to give something back. I believe that people should give back to their community."
