This past April, the eleventh-annual "A Passion for Fashion"
Fashion Show & Luncheon proved to be yet another successful
fundraising event, securing more than $33,000 to fund the new Van Dyke
Haebler Center and in a MobileMammo van used to reach underserved
popluations with mammography services, as well as support a free
mammogram voucher program for the uninsured.
"A Passion for Fashion" guests not only attended to support the center’s exceptional work, but were also treated to a sneak peek of the Van Dyke Haebler Center’s innovative new space in what will soon be known as Columbia St. Mary's Women's Hospital. Established in 1998 through the generosity of donors, the center is home to an outstanding staff of physicians, technologists and nurses who offer the highest quality care in breast cancer screening, diagnosis and treatment.

In August 2010, the Van Dyke Haebler Center will move to its new home on the ground floor of Columbia St. Mary’s Women’s Hospital. In addition to the Van Dyke Haebler Center, the Women’s Hospital will include Birthing Services with newly designed C-section Rooms, the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, the Perinatal Assessment Center and the OB/GYN Clinic.
The new center will build on its tradition as the premier service provider for women’s imaging by maintaining the same comforting feeling in a new larger area that brings state-of-the-art services together in one contiguous space.
Through features like a beautiful environment with artwork, comfortable furniture and warm lighting to plush robes and a commitment to comfort and privacy, patients will experience a caring spirit the moment they enter the center. This calm atmosphere is particularly beneficial to about 15 percent of patients whose initial screening mammogram indicates a need for further testing. The stress and anxiety that sometimes accompanies the wait for this testing can be overwhelming. The private and soothing setting offers amenities to promote a sense of peace and comfort, all designed to deliver an incomparable experience for patients.

This experience is not only what happens behind the closed door of an exam room, it begins from the moment the patient enters the building. Pam Piel, Lead Radiology and Mammography Technician at the center, is looking forward to the new admitting and reception area. "Some patients are pre-registered over the phone, but those that aren't, have to go through admitting which is currently in a different area." Pam explained that, once moved, the center will have its own admitting and reception area, making it more convenient for the patient.
Through the use of the most precise and advanced technologies and the convenience of having diagnostic mammogram and ultrasound facilities within one space, the Van Dyke Haebler Center strives to give patients the peace of mind that comes with a timely and accurate diagnosis. Last year alone, more than 11,000 mammograms were performed at the center.
The new center will also add bone density testing to its services, provide larger exam rooms and include additional space that can be utilized to implement additional services and new technology as they are developed, such as a dedicated breast MRI. With software advancements, this machine produces faster results, and provides more comfort for patients since it is specifically designed to capture images of the breast.
