On March 30, 2010, the nation will celebrate National Doctors Day - a day designated to paying special thanks to those who take such good care of us, our families and those in our community.
National Doctors Day was first observed as a local celebration in a Georgia town in 1933. It celebrated the date when the first ether anesthetic for surgery was administered by Dr. Crawford W. Long (March 30, 1842). President George Bush officially designated National Doctors Day in 1990. The red carnation, a sign of charity, sacrifice, love, courage and bravery is the official symbol of Doctors Day.
At Columbia St. Mary's, we appreciate our physicians' abilities to carry our mission through their work, "to make a positive difference in the health status and lives of individuals and our community, with special concern for those who are vulnerable." Thank you for being healers, advocates and confidants.
When someone is especially kind to you or goes above and beyond the call of duty to make sure your well being is a priority, it’s natural to want to show your appreciation. When it comes to your doctor, there are several ways to say thank you.
Simply telling your doctor, with a note or in person, that their work is
important to you is a nice way to express appreciation. If it’s a
pediatrician, keep them updated on your child’s progress with photos or
an art project from your child. For those who are crafty, a hand-made
present is a special treat. There are policies, however, that inhibit
doctors from accepting certain gifts.
Columbia St. Mary’s policy states that no employee can accept cash or gift certificates that can be converted into cash from patients and/or their family members. Non-cash gifts from patients and/or their family members may be accepted provided that the value of the gift does not exceed $100 and does not come from the same source more than twice a year.
When patients inquire about a monetary gift, they’re encouraged to make a donation through the Columbia St. Mary's Foundation. And March is the perfect time for a gift to honor your doctor! On March 30, 2010, the nation will celebrate the work of our country’s physicians during National Doctors Day – a day designated to paying special thanks to those who take such good care of us, our families and those in our community. You can pay tribute to your physician by making a gift to Columbia St. Mary’s Foundation. With your gift, you may send a special note of thanks to your physician – a prescription to feel great about the work that they’ve done.
