Your gift will bring TAVR to Columbia St. Mary's.

Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) is a minimally invasive, non-surgical procedure to replace the aortic valve. The new valve is delivered through an artery in the leg, eliminating the need for open heart surgery.

Did you know?

  • By age 65, 1 in 4 people will have evidence of aortic valve thickening, reducing blood flow to the heart.

  • By age 80, 1 in 10 people will have such severe, progressed thickening that they will require a valve replacement.

These people are our parents, grandparents, friends and neighbors.

TAVR will provide hope to our patients who are too sick or frail to tolerate the invasive, stressful impact of open heart surgery. TAVR results in better outcomes and quicker recovery. Instead of a week or more in the hospital, patients often go home in just one or two days.

Because of you, TAVR will provide hope for our most frail and vulnerable patients.

"Be of Good Heart" Community Wellness Program

A large percentage of people are unaware that they have diabetes and hypertension - chronic diseases that are primary causes of heart disease and death. Among African-Americans, more than 40% of diabetes cases and 25% of hypertension cases are undiagnosed.

The "Be of Good Heart" Community Outreach Program will reduce this health disparity for impoverished African-Americans living in central Milwaukee by:

  • Identifying those who have, or are most at risk for, diabetes and hypertension

  • Educating people about the diseases

  • Provide health coaching to manage their conditions

  • Connect them to primary medical care

Ascension Columbia St. Mary's Community Services will work with the 90 congregations in our Urban Church Wellness Initiative to screen people living in poverty.

In its first year, "Be of Good Heart" will screen 2,000 people to find those with previously unidentified disease.

Are you a faith-based or community leader?

Please consider hosting monthly health screenings at your churches and organizations to improve heart health in our communities. Our team will work with you to provide training, electronic blood pressure machines, promotional and educational materials.
