Our Heritage

Columbia St. Mary’s has a distinguished tradition of providing quality, compassionate healthcare to southeastern Wisconsin for more than 165 years.

In 1848, St. Mary’s Hospital – the state’s first private hospital, was founded by the Daughters of Charity in response to identified community needs. In 1909, a small group of physicians and community leaders founded Columbia Hospital to provide additional patient care and encourage medical research and education. Joining together as Columbia St. Mary’s in 1995, the team of staff and physicians consist of the finest medical experts – many of whom are considered to be pioneers and visionaries in their field.

Today, Columbia St. Mary’s is a ministry sponsored by Columbia Health System and Ascension Health – the nation’s largest Catholic health system and nonprofit organization. At Columbia St. Mary’s, we have always placed the needs of those we serve as our highest priority and as such, have earned a reputation for providing state-of-the-art medical care in a person centered, healing environment.

With our Mission, Vision and Values guiding our efforts, we will fulfill our promise to those we serve by delivering the Ascension Healthcare Strategic Direction of Healthcare That Works, Healthcare That Is Safe, and Healthcare That Leaves No One Behind, for life.

Columbia St. Mary's Foundation cultivates philanthropic support by connecting community members who are called to care through their gifts to Columbia St. Mary's programs and services. Their gifts make a positive difference in the health status and lives of people in our community.
