Your generous gifts of more than $460,000 will bring TAVR (Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement)

Because of you, many people in need will have the hope and promise of a happier, healthier life.

Benefitting Causes:

Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR)

Our new Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) program is a minimally invasive procedure to replace the aortic valve. The new valve is delivered through an artery in the leg, eliminating the need for open heart surgery.

Did you know?

  • By age 65, 1 in 4 people will have evidence of aortic valve thickening, reducing blood flow to the heart.

  • By age 80, 1 in 10 people will have such severe, progressed thickening that they will require a valve replacement.

These people are our parents, grandparents, friends and neighbors.

With the TAVR procedure, patients avoid the invasive, stressful impact of open heart surgery. TAVR results in better outcomes and quicker recovery. Instead of a week or more in the hospital, patients often go home in just one or two days. For those who are the most frail and vulnerable, TAVR could be the only treatment option.

"Be of Good Heart" Community Outreach Program

A large percentage of people are unaware that they have diabetes and hypertension - chronic diseases that are primary causes of heart disease and death. Among African-Americans, more than 40% of diabetes cases and 25% of hypertension cases are undiagnosed.

The Be of Good Heart community outreach program will reduce this health disparity for impoverished African-Americans living in central Milwaukee by:

  • Identifying those who have, or are most at risk for, diabetes and hypertension

  • Educating people about the diseases

  • Provide health coaching to manage their conditions

  • Connect them to primary medical care

Ascension Columbia St. Mary's Community Services will work with the 90 congregations in our Urban Church Wellness Initiative to reach these individuals. Zip codes 53206, 53210 and 53212 will be targeted.

In its first year, Be of Good Heart will screen 2,000 people to find those with previously unidentified disease.
